SUMMARY:Virtual Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:During the town hall\, Rise will share updates on the state budget regarding child care and discuss our policy priorities. We will also review the results of our survey on child care that was completed by parents and caregivers throughout NYC. \nThe purpose of the virtual town hall is to continue to shift the narrative and establish that child care is a family policing issue. In the movement for universal child care\, Rise’s goal is to center parents impacted by the family policing system. Join us for this conversation and calls to action as we work to shift these structures to better support providers and families. \nRegister via Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:Torn Apart by Dorothy Roberts: NYC Book Release Event

SUMMARY:Virtual Open House: Parent Advocate Job Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:In the coming months\, NYC foster agencies will hire 100-150 Parent Advocates to work in their agencies and support parents with ACS cases.  \nWhile we work toward abolition\, Rise recognizes that many parents experiencing the system right now value the support provided by Parent Advocates who have access to spaces within the system and can work to limit its harm.  \nRise will host two Zoom open houses for NYC parents impacted by ACS to learn more about these job opportunities: \n\nApril 8th\, 1:00-2:00 pm ET\nJune 17th\, 1:00-2:00 pm ET\n\n>> RSVP by emailing jeanette@risemagazine.org to receive the Zoom information.  \n*Please note that Parent Advocates will not be employees of Rise. Rise will provide training to new Parent Advocates hired by foster agencies \n>> Read more.

SUMMARY:Training: History of NYC Child Welfare System (Zoom Event)
DESCRIPTION:This training will focus on the period of time between the New York State Child Welfare Reform Act of 1979 and the federal Adoption and Safe Families Act (ASFA) of 1997. We will discuss the events of the 1980s and early 1990s that were the motivating force behind a seismic shift from “family preservation” to “child protection” as a microcosm of how public service systems are continuously built\, dismantled and rebuilt—and the roles played by the various actors in this process. We will also look at the evolution of the Child Welfare Organizing Project (CWOP) and parent advocacy in New York City. \nRegister here via eventbrite. After you register\, a Zoom link will be sent to you prior to the training. \nThis training is open to the public but most relevant to parents impacted by the child welfare system. \nThis training will be facilitated by Michael Arsham\, Executive Director\, Office of Advocacy\, Administration for Children’s Services & Sabra Jackson\, Parent Engagement Specialist\, Administration for Children’s Services. The presentation was co-developed by Sara Taylor\, MSW intern\, Office of Advocacy\, ACS. \nThis training will be hosted by Rise.
