SUMMARY:Parent Advocate Training Graduation
DESCRIPTION:Rise’s Parent Advocate Training Program provides training to parents impacted by the system who are working as Parent Advocates. The training prepares Parent Advocates to support families with achieving faster family reunification by equipping Parent Advocates with information\, tools and resources to share with parents. \nDuring the online graduation\, you’ll hear from Jeanette Vega Brown\, Rise Co-Executive Director\, and Teresa Marrero\, Rise Parent Advocate Training Coordinator\, about the Parent Advocate training elements and the value of Parent Advocates. You will also hear from graduates about their experiences and takeaways from Rise’s Parent Advocate training. \nRise’s Fall 2022 cohort ran from September 20 through October 13 and provided training for impacted parents working as Parent Advocates in NYC foster and preventive agencies. \nThe Rise Parent Advocate Training Program prepares Advocates working in NYC foster agencies to support parents with: \n\nnavigating the system to reunify more quickly\n\n\nnavigating the trauma and emotions of their case\n\n\nstrengthening self-advocacy skills\n\n\nbuilding a support network and connections to safe\, accessible resources—so that\, once parents reunify with their children\, they do not re-enter the system\n\nGraduation will be held via Zoom. \n>> Register via Eventbrite to join the celebration!

SUMMARY:Training: History of the NYC Child Welfare System
DESCRIPTION:This training will focus on the period of time between the New York State Child Welfare Reform Act of 1979 and the federal Adoption and Safe Families Act (ASFA) of 1997. We will discuss the events of the 1980s and early 1990s that were the motivating force behind a seismic shift from “family preservation” to “child protection” as a microcosm of how public service systems are continuously built\, dismantled and rebuilt—and the roles played by the various actors in this process. We will also look at the evolution of the Child Welfare Organizing Project (CWOP) and parent advocacy in New York City. This training is open to the public but most relevant to parents impacted by the child welfare system. \nThis training will be facilitated by Michael Arsham\, Executive Director\, Office of Advocacy\, Administration for Children’s Services & Sabra Jackson\, Parent Engagement Specialist\, Administration for Children’s Services. Presentation co-developed by Sara Taylor\, MSW intern\, Office of Advocacy\, ACS. \nThis free online training will be hosted by Rise. \n>> Sign up via Eventbrite to receive the Zoom link.

SUMMARY:Virtual Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:During the town hall\, Rise will share updates on the state budget regarding child care and discuss our policy priorities. We will also review the results of our survey on child care that was completed by parents and caregivers throughout NYC. \nThe purpose of the virtual town hall is to continue to shift the narrative and establish that child care is a family policing issue. In the movement for universal child care\, Rise’s goal is to center parents impacted by the family policing system. Join us for this conversation and calls to action as we work to shift these structures to better support providers and families. \nRegister via Eventbrite.
