SUMMARY:History of NYS Child Welfare
DESCRIPTION:This training will focus on the period of time between the New York State Child Welfare Reform Act of 1979 and the federal Adoption and Safe Families Act (ASFA) of 1997. We will discuss the events of the 1980s and early 1990s that were the motivating force behind a seismic shift from “family preservation” to “child protection” as a microcosm of how public service systems are continuously built\, dismantled\, and rebuilt—and the roles played by the various actors in this process. We will also look at the evolution of the Child Welfare Organizing Project (CWOP) and parent advocacy in New York City. The open house is an opportunity to connect with the Rise & Shine staff and ask questions. \nThis is a drop-in info session where you can can come for an hour at any time during the event. You will be able to learn more about the program\, receive support in completing your application and be interviewed for Rise & Shine during the open house. Snacks and a metro card will be provided. Dec. 14 is the last day to apply and be interviewed for Rise & Shine 2023.  \nThis session will take place in person at the Rise office in Manhattan. \n>> Sign up via Eventbrite to attend. \nNote: There is an elevator in the building. Please email Teresa at teresa@risemagazine.org about any other accessibility needs. Child care is not available for in-person open houses. \nRise follows the Fund for the City of NY policy requiring anyone who works in an NYC office or workplace to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
